Hi all, My dad bought a Jd 1075 manual drive late last year to finish cutting our own corn after our contractor let us down a few times. It was bought in a panic by him and more out of annoyance for contractor than anything and without much Inspection!! First I new was when she landed in the yard, but now I seem to be the one picking up the pieces out wrenching at it more than I'm cutting with it because as soon as I tighten or adjust one thing it seems to put pressure on another and we're having a lot of breaks. She wasn't big money but she has been giving bother and I could use some help and advice from anyone that's familiar with them because we've never owned or worked on a combine before.

We Can do almost all our own repairs but we're just not familiar with the machine. We have replaced a few bearings and belts and replaced the v pully system that controls the fan speed. We also did a lot of work with the auger and tank over winter but I'm still in bother.

1) as soon as I tip the clutch she's out of gear, it's either engaged or not there's no sweet spot on it for nudging and I'm finding it a bit hard to get gears on her. Is there any adjustment on the clutch or can it be blead or can I tighten / grease linkages etc anywhere?

2) if I push the break pedal they tend to stick on for a few seconds sometimes. That mixed with a very jumpy clutch makes for some fun putting on the head. 3) Iv cleaned all the chaff from under engine bay and behind tank but I still notice she's getting very hot when I'm working her. Both the oil and the engine and bordering on the red line.

There seems to be two radiators on her, one on either side but they seem to be almost impossible to get in at to clean. Is one of the rads an oil cooler and the other for the engine? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I go for the petrol and the match. She was in a bad state when we got it and Iv pit huge time into it with results but ther just seems to be no end to the jobs. First of all, welcome to the forum!

Re running hot, I replaced the water pump on the father in laws 965 jd two years ago, jd do a reconditioning kit for it at civil money if I recall correctly. I'd imagine it's a similar setup on your combine. Clutch can be adjusted I'm sure, just follow the linkage. Brakes are similar, the linkages can seize a bit, follow it down from the pedals and free them up, make sure the brakes are free moving.

Only one rad for engine coolant in 965 but be sure to get an air line and blow all the crud out. I look at the forums regular but never really post. As a bush repair we removed the thermostats in the field the last day we were working to see if that was the problem. One of them looked pretty bad but she still ran almost as hot. I blew out the radiator this morn and I'm embarrassed at how much stuff was in.

It looked fine when I checked it at start of season but when I went at it with the air line the amount of crap that came out was unbelievable. That definitely will be a help. I think the water pump is ok as once she was left ticking over on headland for a a few minutes she would return to a normal temp and I don't see any leaks around the water pump. She was blowing some water out through the over flow though but maybe that was because she was over heating. Thanks for the tips, il follow the linkages and see can I find any adjustment for brakes and clutch. Also there are two pipes running out to a motor and chain on the neck of the combine.

It's right under where the gear lever and controls are but it's attached to the neck. It doesn't do anything when I'm using the machine but just wondering what it is?

Is it a reverse or something if the neck chokes? W638 repair manual. Last question, the max drum speed I can achieve is 950rpm.

When I adjust it from the cab it will move up and down but only go to back up to 950 so I'm assuming the variable pulley is not seized, would a new belt solve my problem? Iv the same problem on the transmission drive belt, its also on a variable pulley, when I put it in gear in a high delta it pulls fine but in the lower settings it seems to be slipping. For example if I'm in 4th gear and a low delta it slips a lot but if I push the red lever forward and go into a higher delta it pulls find. I was afraid that it was the clutch at first but hoping its just a belt as it's going up hills etc fine if I choose a higher delta.

We measured it to a new one and there seems to be nothing in the difference in width or thickness. I can't measure length as we didn't take it off yet so I was hoping the belt that is on it may just have stretched and is longer than a new one I have and that's causing the slip. What your saying about the lugs would make sense. Do I take off one half of the pully connected to the drum and inspect it from there??

To put my hand in I can only feel a tiny burr on the bottom of the inside of that outer pully. The belt was around 250 so if I can get away with out using it and just tighten or replace something smaller it would be great How do you tighten the traction drive belt? Thanks for the replies.
