Introductory Geosciences I Room 300 Kell Hall Lab Instructor: Email: Office Hours: (You can expect to have your email messages returned within 24 hours except over the weekend when you should expect 48 hours) Laboratory Coordinator: Atieh Tajik (atajik@gsu.edu) Office Hours: By appointment only, please email Website: sites.gsu.edu/geol1121 Laboratory sessions are organized to study certain topics and are not designed to coincide with specific lecture topics. REQUIRED LAB MANUAL Busch, Richard M., Ed. Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology, 10th Edition All students are required to purchase a NEW current edition of the manual because pages are torn out to turn in (NO electronic version, rental or used manual) Students must bring the manual to every lab session and complete all exercises as assigned by their laboratory instructor. ATTENDANCE Attendance is required for all lab sessions – NO MAKE UP Students are expected to be in lab for the entire scheduled lab period unless permitted to leave by the instructor Students must attend the lab they are registered for; otherwise they will not receive any credit. Tardiness is unacceptable (Refer to section in professionalism)) Missing two or more labs unexcused will result in the failure of the lab, and therefore the entire course (Under extraordinary circumstances such as documented illness or documented death in the family, make up may be considered) LABORATORY PREPARATION Students are expected to have read through the chapter listed for each session prior to the beginning of that lab period.
A pre-lab quiz will be performed at the beginning of each lab, assessing your knowledge of the previous lab as well as the lab of the day. LAB EVALUATION/GRADING After a brief lecture (10-15 minutes), assignments will be handed out to be completed during the rest of the lab period. The worksheets will be collected, graded and returned to students in timely manner. Grading of laboratory exercises will be based on the quality and accuracy of the answers to questions.
Students must take part and contribute to the lab activities when working as groups in order to receive the participation/effort credit. (Copying another student’s laboratory work is a violation of university honesty policy and will be treated as such.) Your Lab grade is 25% of your final grade for lecture. Pre-lab Quizzes 40% In lab assignments 50% Participation/ Effort/Professionalism 10% ———————————————————————— 100% PROFESSIONALISM Professionalism addresses the respectful interaction between you and your peers and instructors. Disruptive behavior interferes with everyone’s opportunity to learn. These behaviors include cell phone use, computer or tablet use for a task other than note-taking, doing work for another class, extended off-task conversations, arriving late to class repeatedly, and argumentative interactions with others. For health and safety reasons, food is not permitted during laboratory activities. You may be asked to leave the room for such disruptive behaviors and your active participation grade may be impacted as a result of a lack of professionalism.
Please refer to the section on disruptive behavior in the GSU undergraduate catalog (1050.30) and be aware that additional consequences can include withdrawing from the course. There is a zero tolerance policy for violence or harassment of any kind. ACADEMIC HONESTY The Department of Geosciences expects its students to adhere to the university’s code of student conduct, especially as it pertains to academic conduct. (For the university’s policies on academic misconduct, see in the student catalog, “Academic Honesty,” or Students found in violation of these policies will be reported to the lab coordinator for appropriate action.
ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Students who need accommodations are asked to arrange a meeting during office hours or at another mutually convenient time during the first week of classes, or as soon as possible if accommodations are needed immediately. Bring a copy of your Student Accommodation Form to the meeting.
